Description

The George and Dragon Public House is a public house originally built in the 16th century, with a stable block on the right that was rebuilt in 1880 after a fire. The building has been significantly altered over time and may have originally been a hall-house. The ground floor is underbuilt in painted brick, featuring a moulded bressumer above. The first floor has close-studded timber-framing with plaster infilling. The roof is plain tiled and has an off-centre brick stack. The structure is two storeys tall and has an irregular shape, with a three-window front featuring 19th-century casements that are positioned close to the eaves on the first floor. The entrance is located to the left of the right-hand ground floor window and has a 19th-century boarded door. Inside, there are some chamfered ceiling joists on the ground floor, and a fireplace with spandrels that are carved with the arms of the Earl of Stafford and the see of Canterbury. The range to the right, rebuilt after the 1880 fire, is made of painted brick with painted imitation timber-framing on the first floor. It has a plain tiled roof that is hipped to the south, with one ridge stack off-centre to the left and one right-end stack. This section is also two storeys tall, featuring a three-window arrangement on the first floor and one window to the left on the ground floor, with large wooden casements. There are two entrances with boarded doors located in the centre and to the left.
