Description

The Town House is a hall-house that was altered during the 16th century and restored in the late 19th century. It features a central hall with return gable wings on both the left and right sides. The structure is timber-framed with plaster infilling, close-studded on the right side and square-framed under the left gable, which has curved braces. There is some brick infill on the ground floor. The late 19th-century decorated barge-boards are found in the gables. The roof is plain tiled, with the central hall having a hipped design. There is a small end stack on the right and a tall pair of brick stacks, one square and the other diagonally placed, at the left end. The building has two gabled dormers in the center, one storey and attic in the middle, and two storeys at the ends. A projecting 19th-century gabled porch with decorated barge-boards and an inset linenfold panelled door is located to the left of center, while a tall pentice-roofed oriel is positioned to the right of center. There is also a projecting oriel with a tiled pediment-gabled hood on the first floor under the left-hand gable, and simple metal lattice casements in wooden frames on the ground floor under the left-hand gable and on both floors under the right-hand gable. Inside, the central hall has been opened up, although the roof timbers are from the 19th century, with an attic above.
