Description
The Church of St Mary is an Anglican church built between 1841 and 1842 by Whichcord and Walker. It features Early English details but has a Perpendicular form. The structure is made of coursed rubble stone with some ashlar dressings and has slate roofs. This cruciform church includes a crenellated west tower, a nave, a chancel, and transeptal chapels. There is an octagonal stair-turret on the north-east corner of the tower. The west face of the tower has a door in a moulded, columned opening, with a three-light window above. The transepts and chancel are gabled with parapet-copings. The east window is three-light, and the transept windows are two-light, all featuring simple geometrical tracery. The nave has three bays with lancet windows. The south door is located in the center of the south transept and has a moulded arched surround. Inside, the church has a timber roof with very widely projecting hammer beams, which are decorated with large circles in the spandrels, creating a dramatic effect at the crossing with flying arches.
