Description

The Spong tomb monument, located approximately 14 metres south of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, dates from 1815. It is made of stone and features a wide plinth leading to a pedestal, which has a moulded foot and cornice. Atop the pedestal sits a large coade stone urn, inscribed with the names John and Rosamund Spong. The monument is surrounded by a wrought-iron railing that includes urns on standards. Notably, John Spong was the inspiration for the character Mr. Wardle in Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers."
