Description

The Chequers Public House is a building that dates back to the early 16th century. Originally a house, it is now a public house. The structure is timber-framed with plaster infilling and features a plain tiled roof that has three small return gables and two ridge stacks, positioned to the left and right of the center. The building is 2½ storeys tall, with a front that jetties out over the ground and first floors, supported by moulded bressummers. The jettied section above the first floor is held up by carved wooden brackets.

The fenestration is irregular, with three windows in the gables of the second floor, which are sliding casements, and two small windows flanking the central gable. On the first floor, there are ten windows, including two oriels that are supported by brackets and S-profile coves, located below the gables. The ground floor has six windows, all of which are casements except for two glazing bar sashes on the left. There are four doors on the ground floor, two on each side of the center; these consist of a boarded and ribbed door, a half-glazed door, a double half-glazed door, and another half-glazed door, all dating from the 20th century. Inside, there is significant evidence of internal timber-framing.
