Description

Nepicar House is a house dating from around 1700, with a front added to an earlier block at the rear that was remodeled for the Reverend Sandford Bailey around 1856 by William Burges. The exterior features a red and blue brick chequer pattern on a plinth of coursed stone blocks, along with a brick band. It has a heavy moulded modillion eaves cornice beneath a steep hipped plain tiled roof, which includes two small leaded hipped dormers and two wide brick ridge stacks. The house is two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and has a symmetrical five-window facade. The glazing bar sashes on the ground floor are from the 19th century and have thin glazing bars. The basement windows are blocked, with their heads visible in the plinth. The entrance features central panelled double doors with a large rectangular overlight, accessed by four steps that have an ornamental cast-iron handrail. Above the entrance is a projecting semi-circular hood adorned with shell ornamentation and a plaster relief of a bear at the center, supported by carved foliated console brackets. The rear of the building has two large gables, and there is a gabled two-storey brick wing behind with a door to the north, topped by enriched armorial decoration. Inside, there is a panelled hall and passage leading to an early 18th-century staircase with Salomonic balusters, which has likely been relocated. To the right of the hall is a pilastered panelled room. In 1980, this building received an R.I.B.A. prize for the conservation of historic buildings, and there is a long, low brick and smoked glass office wing attached to the south side, built in the late 1970s.
