Description

1-12 West Cliff Arcade is a row of shops designed by W.G. Osborne for E. Tapply and built in 1883. The shops are constructed of brick and feature timber and glazed shop windows that span the full width of each unit. Cast iron brackets support a glazed canopy.

The arcade is located to the north of the roadway at its eastern end, in front of the Royal Temple Yacht Club. The southern front faces the roadway and offers views over the harbour and sea. It consists of a series of shop fronts divided by painted brick piers aligned with the party walls. The shop fronts have basket-arched heads, with lobbies either centrally located or to one side, featuring transom lights above the arched heads. At least three lobbies retain their original tiled floors. The piers support decorative cast iron brackets that hold up the glazed timber awning running along the front of all the shops. There is a set of steps with stone treads situated between numbers 4 and 5, providing access to the yacht club. The club terrace on the roof features unpainted brick piers with stone dressings and iron railings above the shop fronts.

Inside, the shops along West Cliff Arcade have been converted into restaurants, and several individual spaces have been combined through archways created in their party walls.
