Description
The Pegwell Village Hotel is a mid-19th century hotel that was extended in 1896. It is rendered and features a slate and tiled roof. The building consists of three storeys and an attic, arranged in two linked blocks with a central tower. There is a plinth plat band at the second floor, with quoined projecting alternate bays. To the center left, there is a two-storey open arcaded screen wall. Both blocks have mansard roofs, with a double segmental dormer on the left and six single segmental dormers on the right. There are stacks on both sides and one projecting to the center left. The left block has paired segmental sash windows on the second and first floors, and a sash window on the ground floor set in a scrolled surround with a segmental cornice. All three floors have six replacement windows with brackets and cornices. The tower features a banded upper stage and a modillion cornice at the belfry, with keyed segmental openings, a balustrade, a dome, and a ball finial. There is one sash window in the tower and a scrolled roundel at the base. To the right, there is a double panelled door in a keyed architrave with a rectangular fanlight, set in a pilastered porch with a segmental pediment. Originally known as Tatnell's Hotel in the mid-19th century, it was given in 1894 by Passmore Edwards as a convalescent home for the Working Men's Club and Institute Union, and was extended and altered in 1896. It is now a private hotel again.
