Description
The Bowls Pavilion is a sports pavilion built for bowls between 1928 and 1929 by architect Basil C. Deacon of Franklin and Deacon of Luton. The building features painted and rendered brickwork, with a boarded iron-framed extension added in the late 20th century. Originally, it was identical to the nearby croquet pavilion and includes a front arcade topped with a cornice, balustrade, and flagpole, flanked by flights of steps. The center of the pavilion has a single-storey flat-roofed extension made of iron framing and boarding, with central double doors. All windows are boarded for the winter season. The original arcade remains intact and unaltered behind the 20th-century extension, which does not structurally affect the original building. The pavilion is part of the Westcliff improvements carried out by Franklin and Deacon of Luton and is included for its group value.
