Description

The Croquet Pavilion is a sports pavilion built for croquet or putting green use, constructed between 1928 and 1929 by architect Basil C. Deacon of Franklin and Deacon of Luton. It is made of rendered brick and is a single-storey structure featuring an arcaded design supported by eight Doric columns in antis, with service room doors located at the rear. The pavilion has projecting side blocks, a frieze and cornice, and is topped with a balustrade that includes a cast iron flag pole on the central pier. Simple doorways are present on the return fronts, accompanied by flanking flights of stairs leading to basic cast iron gates. The pavilion is set into a road embankment, providing access to the roof area from the road. Currently, the doorways have iron sheeting doors, and the original window openings in the projecting side sections have been blocked. This building is part of the Westcliff improvements carried out by Franklin and Deacon of Luton.
