Description
The Lido, boating pond, and retaining walls are located on the south side of Royal Esplanade in Ramsgate. This structure was built between 1928 and 1929 by architect Basil C. Deacon of Franklin and Deacon from Luton. The building features rendered brick and includes a low retaining wall along the roadside, with flights of stairs and side walls leading to a terrace. At the center of the terrace is a boating pond with a fountain, and the retaining wall is adorned with cast iron lamp standards. Originally, this circular enclosure served as a dance floor with a central bandstand until it was converted into a boating pool after World War II. A bronze plaque on the lower boundary wall commemorates the opening of the Royal Esplanade and undercliff by the Prince of Wales in 1926. The site is also flanked by sun-shelters and a café, which are listed separately.
