Description
King's Gate is an archway located in the grounds of Port Regis School in Broadstairs. It was built by Lord Holland to commemorate the landing of King Charles II and the Duke of York in 1683. Before this, the site was known as St Bartholomew's Gate. Lady Holland was the great-granddaughter of Charles II. The original gateway was demolished by a gale in 1819 but was later re-erected in the grounds of the Convent.
The arch features a pointed design made of rough flints and includes a Latin inscription indicating the name change from Bartholomew's Gate to King's Gate in honor of the royal landing on June 30, 1683. On the left side of the arch is a stone eagle, while the right side displays a shield. The seaward side has an inscription in metal using Saxon characters that reads "God bless Bath'lem's Gate," along with two stone plaques, each topped with a crown. The left plaque has a "Y," and the right one features two intertwined "Cs," which are thought to represent the Duke of York, King Charles II, and Carolina, Lady Holland. Flint walls flank either side of the archway. All listed buildings within the grounds of Port Regis School are recognized as a group.
