Description
The remains of Neptune's Temple, also known as 'Arx Ruohim', are located on Kingsgate Bay Road. This structure dates from the late 18th century and is one of Lord Holland's follies. It was a miniature version built in flint, inspired by the forts of Henry VIII, such as those at Camber and Deal. The original design included a central tower made of red brick faced with chalk blocks, which once supported a statue of Neptune. An inscription falsely claimed that the monument was built in AD 448 by King Vortigern, referring to it as the Arx Ruohim. Currently, only the flint plinth remains, which is approximately 10 feet high, quatrefoil in shape, featuring a stone band near the top and arrow slit windows.
