Description
The Captain Digby Inn is a building located on Kingsgate Bay Road, incorporating a wing of the Bede House, which was a late 18th-century house of entertainment for visitors attracted to Lord Holland's follies. By 1809, it was known as "The Noble Captain Digby," named after Lord Holland's nephew and drinking companion who commanded the HMS African at the Battle of Trafalgar. Much of the original structure fell into the sea during a strong gale, but part of the old Bede House is included in the current building, which now appears to be from the early 19th century. The inn is two storeys high and faced with flint, featuring a crenellated parapet and a string course. It has three sash windows with intact glazing bars, with the center window projecting. The original crenellated porch has been converted into a window, and there is a modern extension at the rear.
