Description

Circa 1760, the 1st Lord Holland, Henry Fox, constructed a house on the site, which subsequently fell into ruin by the late 18th century. The facade of the present buildings largely dates from around 1840-1850. The central portion, Holland House, is a three-story building with a basement, and is stuccoed. It is flanked by two wings. The central section features long and short quoins, a stringcourse above the first floor, a modillion cornice, and a balustraded parapet. First and second-floor windows have Venetian shutters; the first-floor windows are surrounded by architraves. A porch with a triglyph frieze, a round-headed arch, and double doors is present, as is an iron balcony on the first floor with projections over the porch. The wings are plain except for a stringcourse above the first floor. The entire house has a slate roof, with largely intact glazing bars. A stuccoed wall with a balustrade borders the area in front of the house and is flanked at the ends by figures of couchant lions on plinths. “Little Holland House,” the left wing, is two stories high and stuccoed, with a hipped slate roof, a modern casement window on the left side, and an eight-sided modern bay. It features a simple round-headed doorcase with four engaged columns, an entablature, and round-headed arches. “Holland End,” formerly the right wing, is also two stories and stuccoed, with a hipped slate roof, five sash windows with intact glazing bars, and a porch with four engaged Tuscan columns and a round-headed doorcase. The central portico of the original Holland House was removed and relocated to the Sea Bathing Hospital at Margate.
