Description
Hackemdown Tower is a late 18th-century circular tower located on the north side of Convent Road in Broadstairs. It was built by Lord Holland after he discovered human bones in a barrow on his estate, believed to be from a battle between the Danes and Saxons around 850. The tower features a flint base with crenellated yellow brick coping and bands. Originally, it had four ogee arches on Doric columns at its base, which have since been removed. The tower is adorned with four quatrefoil ornaments, two blank panels, and one stone panel that bears a Latin inscription. An arched doorcase leads into the structure. The inscription commemorates the fallen Danes and Saxons and reflects on the historical significance of the site. The tower is enclosed by a large, low circular wall made of brick and flint, which also has a crenellated parapet. All listed buildings within the grounds of Port Regis School are considered to have group value.
