Description

Ramsgate General Hospital's main buildings were constructed between 1907 and 1909 by architects Woodd & Ainslie and builders Woodhall and Son. The hospital features red Crowborough facing brick with Newington Red dressings, a faience cornice, and a plain tiled roof. The main block is H-shaped and connects to an entrance block with side wings designed in the Neo-Georgian style. The entrance block, dated 1908, is two storeys high, set on a plinth with rusticated quoins, and has four giant pilasters supporting a moulded cornice that leads to a hipped roof with stacks on either side. The first floor has four glazing bar sash windows with moulded aprons, and to the left of the central double panelled door, there are three full-height glazing bar sashes with gauged keyed heads and a traceried rectangular fanlight in a moulded stone surround.

The single-storey flanking wings have open pediment gables on rusticated quoins, with a keyed oculus above a glazing bar sash. The corridor leads to the H-shaped range, which is two storeys and an attic high, featuring rusticated quoins and a moulded cornice under hipped roofs, with stacks positioned to the left, centre left, centre right, and right, and additional glazing bar sashes. The hospital has been surrounded by additions from the 1920s onwards, all in a similar style.

The construction of the hospital was funded by a legacy of £15,500 from Mr. John Nicholas, intended to relocate the facility from the Seamen's Infirmary across the road. The building was officially opened in October 1909 by Lord Brassey, the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Originally, the entrance block housed the entrance hall, outpatient services, and domestic services, while the main block contained two wards in each wing and four private rooms. Wood & Ainslie were also consulting architects for Guy's Hospital in London.
