Description

This is a pair of houses, Nos. 23 and 24, dating from the 1840s in Ramsgate. The houses are built with a rendered facade over a brick core, with the brick exposed on the return elevations. They have a slate roof. The design is four storeys high with a basement. Prominent giant pilasters are located on the left and right sides, with a central pair of coupled pilasters supporting an entablature to the third floor. Above that is a balustraded parapet and stacks to the left and right. The third floor has four sash windows with a central, semi-circular headed niche, and the second floor has four sash windows. A later 19th-century tented and glazed wooden verandah is present on the first floor. The ground floor features four sash windows and two central, half-glazed doors with semi-circular fanlights, each accessed by five moulded steps. Sash windows are also present in the basement. Simple iron rails enclose the steps and areas. The decorative details are inspired by the nearby Royal Crescent. The buildings are included on the list for their contribution to the wider group value of the area.
