Description
The Powder Magazine and its flanking walls were built by John Shaw in 1828. The structure features ashlar walls topped with a slate roof and has timber doors.
The magazine is a single-storey, rounded lozenge-shaped building with a high blast wall that extends about 5 to 6 meters beyond the magazine at both ends. The exterior is made of large stone ashlar blocks supporting a slate roof with swept hipped ends and a parapet gutter. There are no windows, but two single wooden panelled doors are located on the curved ends. A small buttress is present at the north-east angle between the magazine and the flanking wall, while scarring at the south-east angle indicates that a matching buttress may have once existed there. The extending walls are stepped down on either side of the magazine.
