Description
The gates and railings to the churchyard of St. George are 19th-century features made of wrought iron and ashlar masonry. The iron rails are approximately 5 feet high and sit on a low masonry wall. They include iron-twist principals with baluster finials and scrolled panelled piers that have iron twist supports and baluster finials. The structure extends about 50 meters in length and returns along the roadside at the northern end for about 15 meters. It is terminated at both ends by rusticated piers that are about 12 feet high and topped with ball finials. At the northern end of the longer section of railings, the rails rise to rusticated gate piers that have gadrooned urn finials. The entrance features double leaf carriage gates with pedestrian side gates, all equipped with dog rails, scrolled central panels, and a scrolled frieze arching over the carriage gates. The scrolled iron piers support the carriage gates and are adorned with scrolled finials, along with scrolled cartouche-like overthrows for both the pedestrian and carriage gates.
