Description

The war memorial is located outside the west door of St George's Church, which is a Grade I listed building, and can be accessed through the ornamental churchyard gates, which are Grade II listed, from Church Hill. The memorial features a tall stone cross with a blind wheel-head. The octagonal cross shaft rises from a drum-like, octagonal plinth, which is set on a low base that sits on a broad octagonal dais with four steps.

The front face of the cross is decorated with a reversed sword carved in relief. At the foot of the shaft, there is a relief carving of a three-masted man o’ war with billowing sails. The rear of the cross features a carving in the wheel-head of St George on a rearing horse, piercing a dragon with his spear.

Around the top of the plinth, there is a relief carving of scripture from John 12:32, which reads: "If I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." The main dedication on the front face of the plinth honors the men of Ramsgate who died in the First World War, stating: "To the men of Ramsgate who died gloriously in the Great War 1914-1919. True love by life, true love by death is tried. Live thou for England, we for England died." To the left, there is an inscription for Second World War servicemen and women, which reads: "In remembrance of the Ramsgate men & women in the services who gave their lives 1939 – 1945." To the right, the inscription for civilians states: "In remembrance of all who lost their lives in Ramsgate through enemy action 1939 – 1945." On the rear of the plinth, the words "In manus tuas, Domine" are carved.
