Description
Down Barton is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations and extensions in the 18th century. It is primarily timber-framed and now clad in red brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building follows a four-bay framed plan. The right-hand bay was clad around 1700, while the remaining three bays have later 18th-century brickwork. There is a parapet to the roof, hipped on the left and gabled on the right, with stacks located to the rear left, rear centre, and projecting from the end right. A flat-roofed dormer with a horizontal sliding sash window is present. The first floor has three sash windows and a lunette above the central left doorway. The ground floor features two 20th-century wooden casements and a sash window on the right. A 19th-century gabled porch with a Gothick style door is situated at the centre left. A one-story hipped extension projects to the left, originally a dairy and now used as a garage. The interior reveals the full timber frame and includes a clasped purlin roof (though not fully visible). There are remnants of a fire hood in the returned wing on the left, as well as inglenooks.
