Description
The memorial to Charles Lemon Frazer Daniell, located in St John's Cemetery, was erected in 1899. It is made of Portland stone and is surrounded by a decorative iron railing on a stone kerb.
The design features a cross atop a tall, slightly tapering Classical pedestal, which is styled as a Rostral Column, with the prow of a boat emerging from either side. At the base of the cross is an anchor, and a carved chain, though partially missing, is draped over the cross. The top of the pedestal bears the original inscription, while a decorative panel below showcases a shell and acanthus leaf motif. The plinth also includes inscriptions dedicated to other members of the Daniell family.
This memorial combines traditional Christian symbols, such as the cross of faith and the anchor of hope, with classical architectural forms. Rostral columns were historically used in ancient Greece and Rome to commemorate naval victories and were adorned with the prows of captured ships. Charles Lemon Frazer Daniell served in the Royal Naval Reserve, and the maritime theme of the monument is reflected in its design elements, including the anchor, shell motif, and rostra.
The memorial is designated for its sculptural interest, as it creates a visually rich tribute that blends Christian symbolism with classical references. It also holds group value due to its proximity to the notable Sanger family memorials located immediately to the north.
