Description
The Deptford War Memorial is located at the north end of the memorial gardens along Lewisham Way. Made of Portland stone, the memorial features a tapering octagonal column topped with a carved flame, resting on a square pedestal and base. The pedestal has a cornice that forms a segmental arch over each face. On the east and west sides of the pedestal, there are carved figures of a soldier and a sailor, respectively, leaning against raised tablets. The figures hold their upturned guns with bowed heads.
The north face of the pedestal bears the inscription: DEPTFORD'S / TRIBUTE TO / HER GALLANT SONS / WHO WERE FAITHFUL / UNTO DEATH / 1914-1918 / 1939-1945. Above this inscription is a relief carving of a setting or rising sun, and below it is a relief carving of a rifle and sword crossed through a laurel wreath.
The memorial is set on a circular dais, flanked by stone piers. These piers are connected by a curved run of railings that enclose the memorial to the south and act as the northern boundary of the memorial garden, creating a cohesive ensemble with the memorial.
