Description

Zion Baptist Chapel dates to 1846. It is a two-story building with three windows, featuring a pedimented gable end facing New Cross Road. A round window with four 'keys' or radiating elements is set within the tympanum of the pediment. The chapel is accompanied by a pair of narrow, two-story wings set back on either side, incorporating passages on the ground floor. The exterior is multicoloured brick with four stucco giant pilasters that support a frieze inscribed "ZION CHAPEL" and a cornice above. The first-floor windows are round-arched, contained within moulded architraves featuring keystones and impost strings, with a bracketed cill string, and contain glazing bars and margin lights. The ground floor has three round-arched entrances, the central one being larger, each with six-panel doors set within moulded architraves having verniculate keystones. The returns to the rear have five windows; the first-floor windows mimic those on the front, while the ground floor windows are segment-headed. The windows are recessed within giant round walls but lack stucco dressings except for the cills. A rear extension provides space for a Sunday School.
