Description

The memorials are a group dedicated to the Sanger family, including 'Lord' George Sanger, and consist of five monuments. Four of these are female marble statues on grey granite plinths, arranged at the corners of a plot defined by a low granite curb. The plinths were made by J & H Patteson of Manchester, but the sculptor of the statues is unknown.

1) At the north corner, there is a female figure in classical drapery gazing skyward, with her right hand on her breast and her left hand holding the chain of an anchor. The dedications include 'Lord' George Sanger, known as the famous circus proprietor, and his daughter, Sarah Harriett Sanger, who died in 1929, the wife of Arthur Reeve.

2) At the east corner, a female figure is depicted sowing flowers from a fold in her cloak. The dedications include Ellen Sanger, née Chapman, and Arthur Reeve, who died in 1933.

3) At the west corner, there is a female figure in classical drapery looking skyward while holding a document in her left hand. The dedications include Laurina Coleman, who lived from 1853 to 1882, and was the daughter of 'Lord' George Sanger.

4) At the south corner, a female figure in classical drapery clasps a crucifix to her breast with her right hand. The dedications include Harriet Chapman, who lived from 1802 or 1803 to 1888, and was the mother of Ellen Sanger.

To the south-east, between the four monuments and the separately listed monument to John Sanger, there is a fifth monument featuring a marble statue of an angel placing a wreath on a ragged cross, set on a marble plinth. This monument includes dedications to William Sanger and his wife, Mary Rebecca, who died in 1893.
