Description

The York Gate is a late 16th-century gatehouse, built around 1540, with repairs undertaken in 1795. It spans Harbour Street, featuring a pointed arch that originally had grooves for a portcullis. A bastion is present on the south-west side of the gate. On the north-east side, only the groove where the portcullis fitted remains. The group value of the building lies in its historical significance as a well-preserved example of an early fortified gateway.
