Description

The Church of St Lawrence is a parish church that dates back to the 13th century and was consecrated in 1222. It underwent restorations in the 18th century and again in 1882, during which a vestry was added. The church is constructed of flint, with red and blue brick on the north nave aisle, and features a plain tiled roof. The layout includes a chancel, nave, north aisle, a north-west vestry, a west tower, and a south porch. The west end was rebuilt in the 19th century, which included the addition of the south porch and a tiled belfry on the west tower.

The chancel has lancet windows on the south, north, and east sides, along with two light 14th-century windows on the south. The north aisle features 15th-century windows that were reset in 18th-century brick on each wall. Inside, there is a two-bay north arcade with chamfered moulded abaci and a large square pier. The nave has a roof supported by three crown posts, while the chancel has a timbered gable roof with three smaller crown posts.

Notable fittings include a piscina in the chancel with a shelf, a hollow chamfered surround, and moulded stops, along with a drip mould above. There is a smaller, identical piscina in the north aisle. A significant monument in the chancel commemorates Katherine Rooper, who died in 1606. This wall monument features an alabaster figure of a kneeling woman at a prayer desk, with her son Francis Herdson depicted behind her, all set within an architectural surround that includes ribboned side pieces, a scrolled and floriated base, a coffered cornice, and an achievement above. The eastern lancets contain stained glass created by Kempe in 1888.
