Description
Cooksditch is a large 18th-century house, built between 1774 and 1798, located on the north side of East Street. The main section features three storeys and three windows, with a cornice and parapet, and is fronted with white brick, while the sides are made of red brick. It has a hipped slate roof and a porch supported by Ionic columns with a dentilled cornice. The round-headed doorway includes a semi-circular fanlight.
The two projecting wings are single-storey pavilions, each adorned with a cornice and pediment. Beneath the cornice, each wing has a depressed brick arch and a large three-light window, with the outer lights flanked by Ionic pilasters and the center light supported by engaged Ionic columns. Above these features is a dentilled cornice and a stone rectangular panel in the tympanum of the brick arch. The east and west sides of the wings are apisidal-ended. The entire house retains its original glazing bars. A 19th-century wing has been added behind the east wing. Cooksditch is part of a group with Nos 15 to 19, which are consecutive.
