Description

Flint House is a mid-19th century former school building, originally a grammar school for boys known as William Gibb School. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings and a slate roof, with some stock brick to the rear. Later 19th and early 20th century red brick extensions to the rear are not of particular interest. The building is asymmetrical, ranging between one and three storeys with irregular window placement, and includes a projecting hall to the rear.

The right-hand bay is single-storey with a crenellated parapet, a paired cinquefoil-headed light and arched doorcase with a double cinquefoil-headed fanlight above. A plinth is also present. To the left of this is a projecting gable with a diamond-shaped quatrefoil window to the gable and two cinquefoil-headed lights below, flanked by buttresses. A further section features a gabled semi-dormer and two ground floor double cinquefoil-headed windows. The extreme left is a three-storey gabled tower with one paired cinquefoil-headed window on each floor. The right-hand elevation has two gables with original windows and a flat-arched doorcase. The left-hand elevation features a cinquefoil-headed light to all floors, a recessed bay with an arched doorcase and traceried fanlight above, and a double cinquefoil-headed light, followed by a projecting bay with a ground-floor triple window with a cinquefoil-headed light. There is an external flint and stone chimneystack to the left return, while part of the rear elevation is finished in stock brick. The left side of the rear elevation displays a projecting hall with gable kneelers, diagonal buttresses, a diamond-shaped window to the gable, arched windows below, and three bays of triple mullioned windows.

The interior hall features a timber roof with tie beams and curved braces supported on stone corbels, and a marble fireplace to an adjoining room.
