Description
The Parish Church of St Mary of Charity is a cruciform church dating from the 14th to 15th centuries, with restorations carried out in the 19th century. In 1755, the interior of the nave was demolished and replaced in a classical style by George Dance, featuring Doric columns, a triglyph frieze adorned with swags and branches in the metopes, and semi-circular openings that frame the medieval clerestory windows on the outside. The original central medieval tower was also taken down in 1797, and a brick openwork spire was constructed at the west end of the church. This spire was encased in stone in 1855 by George Gilbert Scott, who additionally reworked the nave and transepts between 1873 and 1875.
