Description
This is a group of timber-framed houses refronted in the 18th century, located at Nos. 87 to 92 Abbey Street. The houses retain the overhang of their first floors on a bressummer and brackets, a characteristic feature of the earlier timber-framed construction. The buildings are two storeys high with attics, and contain a total of seven windows and nine dormers. The fronts are stuccoed, with Nos. 91 and 92 facing in painted brick, and No. 89 featuring close studding. A wooden eaves cornice runs along the top of the facades, with No. 92 further distinguished by a dentilled cornice and parapet. The roofs are tiled. Most windows are sash windows with intact glazing bars, with the exception of those on the first floor of Nos. 89, 91, and 92. Seven small canted bays are present on the ground floor, and No. 92 includes a small, curved shop window, all of which retain their original glazing bars. The doorways are framed by moulded architraves, with six-panel doors; No. 89 has a wooden boarded door, No. 92 a glazed door with margin lights, and No. 91 is not in good condition. Nos. 82 to 92, Nos. 94 and 95, and Nos. 98 and 99 form a group.
