Description
82 and 83 Abbey Street are a pair of terraced houses, with a similar frontage to no 84. They date from the 18th century and incorporate reused late 16th century features in the doorcase of no 83, which may also have a late 16th century timber-framed core. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, topped with a tiled roof and a central brick chimneystack. They are two storeys high with attics and feature four windows. The houses have flat-roofed dormers, a parapet, and a dentilled eaves cornice. The first floor has tripartite 24-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features curved bays with 24 panes. No 82 has a doorcase with a semi-circular fanlight, impost blocks, and a six-panelled door. No 83 boasts an elaborate doorcase with engaged clustered columns, an open pediment supported by reused late 16th century "grotesque" brackets, and is dated 1598 with the initials HS. It also has a rectangular fanlight and a c1820 door with five moulded panels.
