Description

No. 84 Abbey Street is a late 16th century timber-framed house, built around 1589, and later refronted in the early 19th century. It is part of a terrace that includes Nos. 82 and 83. The building has two storeys and attics, with its front covered in painted mathematical tiles. It features a tiled roof with a brick chimney stack and a parapet with stone copings. The first floor has a tripartite sash window, while the ground floor boasts a restored bow window that matches those of Nos. 82 and 83.

The left side doorcase includes a blocked round-headed fanlight, impost blocks, and a panelled door. The rear elevation reveals the exposed timber frame with close studding, and the attic gable is supported by curved brackets. There are two side windows on each floor that retain their original triple mullioned windows. The central windows consist of tripartite sashes on the lower floors and a casement in the attic storey.

Inside, the house features an impressive late 16th century interior, including a room with oak panelling, a strapwork frieze, an overmantel with pilasters and arches, and a cupboard with cocks head hinges. The well staircase is notable for its moulded handrail and chamfered newel posts with knops. The dining room contains an early 19th century wooden fire surround with reeding and paterae, a cast iron basket grate, and late 16th century panelling with a frieze of mutules. The drawing room also has oak panelling with a mutule frieze, pilasters, and an overmantel featuring pilasters, terms, and strapwork motifs. The doorcases are stopped with panelled doors, and there are three plank doors with iron hinges. The ground floor passageway showcases chamfered beams and decorative brackets.
