Description
The Royal Cinema, originally an Odeon cinema and now a bingo hall, was built in 1936 by architect A Mather in a Tudor style to harmonize with the traditional buildings in the historic centre of Faversham. The front elevation features local stone ashlar with a handmade tiled roof, while the remainder is constructed of stock brick with a hipped corrugated asbestos roof. The front has turret-like ends with a crenellated parapet and a recessed centre that includes a seven-light, three-tier bay window with an oak frame and leaded lights adorned with coloured glass. This bay window is flanked by plaster-work panels decorated with masks and strapwork, and above it is lead guttering featuring foliated motifs.
The ground floor has a projecting canopy supported by grotesque plastered female brackets, referencing genuine late 16th-century examples from the adjacent house. The fascia displays diamond-shaped projections, a theme echoed in the illuminated panel beneath the canopy. The entrance features a carved panel above with Tudor roses, foliage, and sea monsters, along with three double wooden doors that have decorative iron handles. The tiled roof has a central lead flèche topped with an iron weather vane depicting a cameraman shooting a film.
Inside, the square foyer has a Tudor-style plank door, a cornice with Tudor roses, and walls plastered with a raised chevron pattern. There are two square-shaped Tudor-style light fittings with corner pendants and a St Andrew's Cross design. The auditorium features a four-centred proscenium arch and a curved roof with original lantern-shaped light fittings. The lower parts of the walls are timber-framed, continuing the Tudor theme with raised plaster animals and flowers. An original octagonal-shaped clock is positioned above the exit, featuring a helmet visor, foliage designs on the sides, and a motto below.
