Description
Tudor House, located at No. 10 The Markey Place, dates from 1570, as indicated by the date painted on the front. This timber-framed building features a plastered front that has been painted grey and white to mimic timbering. It stands four storeys tall and has two large windows and four smaller ones. Each floor jetties out on a bressumer and brackets. The building has two gables with carved bargeboards and pendants. Beneath the gables are contemporary bay windows on the first and second floors, with the second-floor bays supported by carved brackets. All windows have small square leaded panes and old green glass, although many panes are broken and have been replaced. On each side of the bays on both flanks, there are two small windows with two lights each, set in a flush moulded architrave surround with diamond leaded panes and old green glass. The ground floor features a modern shop front with an early 19th-century doorway that has a rectangular fanlight. Inside, there is panelling and a stone fireplace. Tudor House is part of a group of listed buildings in the Market Place, which includes Nos 8 and 10, forming a group with Nos 39, 39A, and 40, the Omnibus Enquiry Office, and Nos 41 to 48 (consecutive) on Court Street.
