Description
Gates, piers and walls dating to 1851. The structure is built of squared, coursed ragstone walls with tooled, rusticated ashlar piers and cast-iron gates. The walls are capped and have coped details with secondary piers, curving forward approximately 20 metres to the left and right. The double-leaf gates have anthemion-headed finials and dogbars. These walls and associated gate lodge (No. 56 South Road) form part of the Chart Mills (Scheduled Ancient Monument) and were built by William Hall after 1854, when he rationalized the Faversham gunpowder works. The walls enclose several pre-existing buildings and formed the main approach and boundary to the mills, demonstrating the use of stone in the town. The Chart Gunpowder Mills formed part of the Home Works of the Royal Gunpowder Factory.
