Description
56 South Road is a gatehouse to the former gunpowder works, now serving as a house. It was built in 1851 or 1852 and features hammer-dressed ragstone ashlar with rock-faced dressings, a stone ridge stack, and a slate hipped roof. The building has a T-shaped single-depth plan and is designed in the Italianate style.
The exterior is single-storey with a one-window range front that includes a plinth. A shallow gable with overhanging eaves extends to the right over a round-arched, keyed doorway that has a boarded door. There is a segmental-arched 6/6-pane casement in the gable, with similar windows on other elevations. The chimney has a wide, thin cornice, and there is a later extension at the rear.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the Chart Gunpowder Mills were part of the Royal Gunpowder Factory's Home Works and were rebuilt in 1815. The gate lodge and its associated walls were constructed by William Hall as the main entrance to the Mills after he took control and rationalized the Faversham works from 1854. This building is one of the few complete surviving structures directly linked to the gunpowder works in the center of Faversham and is a rare example of stone construction in the town.
