Description

The archway connecting No 3 and The Old Guildhouse in Penshurst is likely the work of architect George Devey and dates from the 16th century or earlier. This structure serves as a connecting link over a passageway, supported by restored timber posts. The first floor features tile hanging and a ridge tile roof, along with leaded windows. There is a stepway leading up to the rear, which includes carved newel posts. A painted board facing the church at the rear bears the text: "My flesh shall rest in hope." The archway is part of a group that includes Wall Cottage, Nos 1 to 3 (consecutive), the Old Guildhouse, the Post Office, and the retaining wall.
