Description
The Post Office and the adjoining house, formerly known as the National Provincial Bank, were built in 1850 by George Devey. The building features a monogram in the gable end, "P.S.C." It consists of irregular cottages that form the corner of Leicester Square and stands two storeys high. The gable ends are adorned with ornamental bargeboards and a complex, picturesque tile roof, complemented by period Tudor chimney stacks. The ground floor is constructed of unevenly laid stone courses and includes wooden mullioned windows. The first floor overhangs and is supported by carved corner brackets and exposed timber joists, showcasing a half-timbered and rendered design. The Post Office and its surrounding structures, including Wall Cottage (Nos 1 to 3 in sequence), the Archway, and the Old Guildhouse, create a cohesive group.
