Description

The Paddocks is a house dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with an extension added around 1850. It features a weather-boarded timber frame and tile hung gable at the north end, topped with a plain tile roof that has gabled ends. The house has two brick axial stacks and is designed as a two-room cottage with a central stack, along with a one-room extension on the north end. It is one storey high with an attic.

The west front has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with a total of four: the single window on the left is part of the mid-19th century extension. The windows are early 19th century and late 19th century casements with leaded panes, including an attic casement in a small gable to the right of center. There is a doorway to the left of center with a tall canopied porch. The gable ends also feature similar leaded casements.

On the east (rear) elevation, there is a central gable similar to the front, with a leaded-pane casement and a small casement under the eaves. To the right, there is a 12-pane sash window, and to the left, two large stone windows, believed to be from Penshurst Place, each with three four-centred arch lights and narrow sash windows with margin glazing bars. A 20th-century glazed porch is located on the south gable end.

Inside, the south room has fielded dado panelling. The Paddocks was home to the Duke family, known for making cricket bats and balls in the nearby cricket ball factory. The house was extended around 1850 when it became the residence of the Penshurst Bailiff, coinciding with the factory's relocation in 1841.
