Description
Hever War Memorial is a First World War memorial, unveiled in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of red Hollington stone and is located in the north-west corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial is situated to the north of Church Cottage and Ghyll Cottage, which are both Grade II listed.
The memorial features a wheel cross with foliate decoration carved on the cross head, which sits atop a tapering shaft. The cross shaft rises from a two-stepped plinth, with the upper step being square in plan and the lower step octagonal in plan. The entire memorial is set on an octagonal base.
On the north face of the upper step of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918." The names of nine individuals who fell in that conflict are incised on the east and west faces of the plinth. The north face of the lower step of the plinth is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," along with the names of six individuals who are recorded on the north-east and north-west faces.
