Description

The Crown Hotel is a Grade II* listed timber-framed building located on the west side of High Street in Edenbridge. It consists of two sections, with the right part dating back to the 15th century and featuring two storeys and three windows. The left part appears to be slightly later and also has two storeys but only two windows. Both sections have high-pitched tiled roofs that are hipped on the left side.

The left section has a weatherboarded first floor and a pointed brick ground floor, with 18th-century sash windows featuring glazing bars in flush moulded frames on the first floor. The ground floor includes a modern half-glazed door and a small shop window with bars. There is a carriageway on the right side of the left section supported by heavy oak beams with corner brackets.

The right section has a weatherboarded first floor with 18th-century flush framed sash windows that also have glazing bars. The ground floor is boarded to imitate stone courses and features a half-glazed door flanked by reproduction leaded casements. An ornamental wrought iron signboard stretches across the street on brackets.

Inside, the hotel boasts a 16th-century carved stone fireplace surround in the front room and a 15th-century carved oak crown post in the attic, along with various moulded exposed beams and other historical features. The Crown Hotel, along with No 72 (Church House) and its barn, forms a group of significant buildings.
