Description

Horns Hill Lodge is a small, single-ended hall house dating from the 15th century or earlier, with significant alterations made in the 16th century. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, with a half-hip on the left side. A 16th-century chimney stack rises from the roof at the junction of the hip and ridge, featuring three shafts joined together, with the outer two shafts angled diagonally. Evidence of smoke-blackening from a former open hearth is visible on the roof timbers. Timber framing with old wattle-and-daub infilling is visible on the first floor. The house has two storeys and two windows. The ground floor is built of brick. The windows are leaded casements, with one being a gabled half-dormer that breaks through the eaves. Inside, there is substantial, fairly close-studded timber framing, including heavy main posts and beams. A particularly notable feature is a very heavy cross-beam with elaborate roll mouldings. In the attic, there is a crown post partially concealed within a 16th-century plastered partition.
