Description

Chartwell is a 20th-century house of red brick with a stone basement, designed by the architect Philip Tilden. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and features six windows in the main block, three in a left-hand canted bay with a parapet, and two at the right in a slightly projecting gabled section. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, with tall chimneys. The windows are brick mullioned and transomed casements. An elaborate carved stone doorcase frames a double door of old oak. Fragments of an older building, potentially dating to the 16th or 17th century, are visible in the brickwork of the external walls. Chartwell served as the home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1922 until his death in 1965 and contains a collection of his personal possessions and relics. A group of his friends presented the house to the National Trust during his lifetime. The house is listed primarily for its historical significance.
