Description
St Clere is a large house built in the second quarter of the 17th century. The entrance front has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring five windows along with windows in octagonal angle towers. The high-pitched hipped roof is slated and has a row of coupled tall chimneys, which are now rendered, running along the ridge. There are three pedimented dormers, a modillioned cornice, and a parapet that dates from 1767, as indicated on the rainwater head. The house has raised brick quoins and shouldered architraves, which are now rendered, surrounding sash windows with glazing bars in exposed frames.
A projecting central porch from the 19th century features rusticated brick columns and a stone entablature with ball finials. Inside, the hall has 18th-century panelling and a fine 18th-century staircase. There is also a chimneypiece by Sir John Soane, which was brought from the Bank of England. The simpler south front lacks the towers and porch and has a balustraded stone terrace accessed by seven steps. There are later additions to the east of the house. St Clere is related in style to the original Chevening House. The forecourt wall and gates, along with the outbuilding to the northeast and the outbuilding to the northwest, form a cohesive group with the main house.
