Description
Number 6, Dentistry is a dental practice designed in 1928 by Hugh Mickay Baillie Scott, showcasing a Neo-Georgian style. The building is rendered with red brick dressings and features a hipped tiled roof with two tall red brick chimneystacks. It is a single-storey structure with four windows. The layout includes a central atrium that houses three dental surgeries, a waiting room, a sterilizing room, and an office.
The front elevation has a recessed centre with two 12-pane sash windows in a brick surround, along with a set-back doorcase that features a decorated rectangular fanlight, a six-panelled door, and flanking curved panels and pilasters, all approached by three stone steps. There is an octagonal glazed dome behind the doorcase. The projecting wings have 24-pane floor-length sashes, and the flanking walls are supported by brick piers; however, the original urns were missing at the time of the survey. The waiting room on the right side has a canted bay.
There is a later 20th-century flat-roofed extension at the rear, and an L-shaped extension to the north in a matching style, which is not of special interest as it was not part of the original plans and was likely added in the mid-20th century. Purpose-built dental practices from this period are considered rare, and this is the only example designed by Baillie Scott.
