Description

Southdown House is a late 19th-century range of buildings, arranged in a shallow U-shape and resembling a row of almshouses. It has a tiled roof with tall, decorative brick chimneys. The building is two storeys high, with one or two windows in each section, most of which are beneath gables, except for the outer portions of the left and right wings. The architectural style is picturesque neo-Tudor, incorporating oversailing attics and first floors. The construction utilizes a variety of materials including stone, brick, half-timbering with pebble-dashed surfaces, and wood shingles. The windows are casement windows of multiple lights, some of which are canted, while others are square or oriels supported by carved brackets. The building has boarded doors. Southdown House, together with numbers 2 to 9 of The Square, and a nearby cottage, are designated as a group due to their shared architectural character.
