Description
The National Westminster Bank, located at 70 High Street, is a modern Georgian style building dated 1926. It features a four-storey facade with a pediment, three windows on each floor, and a circular attic window in the pediment. The exterior is constructed of red brick with blue headers, complemented by red brick quoins and dressings.
The windows are topped with flat arches made of rubbed red headers, with a central projecting stone voussoir above the middle window on the first floor that is intricately carved. Above the first-floor windows, there are recessed rectangular brick panels of blue headers. The sash windows have moulded exposed frames with glazing bars and projecting moulded stone cills. The centre sash windows on all floors have three vertical panels, while the narrower sash windows on either side have two vertical panels. The top circular window in the pediment features glazing bars and four stone voussoirs arranged diametrically. The pediment itself is adorned with a painted wooden moulded modillioned design, featuring carved and enriched console brackets and an egg-and-dart moulded fillet. The roof of the pediment is leaded, while the rear has a ridge tile roof.
The ground floor has a slightly projecting office front supported by four fluted Ionic columns that hold up a moulded entablature with a dentilled cornice. Ornamental cast iron railings sit atop the office front, creating a long narrow verandah in front of the first-floor windows. A stone plinth forms the base of the office front. To the left, there are panelled double doors that ascend three moulded stone steps, topped with a fan-light in a moulded wooden arched surround featuring a central projecting voussoir. To the right, two office windows with glazing bars are set in wooden arched moulded surrounds, each with ornamental cast iron railings in front. The entire ground floor office front is made of unpainted dark teak.
