Description

Grosvenor House is an early 18th-century building located on Vicarage Hill, Westerham. The front elevation is notable for its symmetrical design, featuring a central doorway and nine sash windows arranged over two storeys, with four smaller basement windows. The brick construction incorporates blue headers, a brick plinth and band, and corner pilasters that extend two storeys, topped by a parapet with stone coping. A concealed tile roof is topped by two chimney stacks with recessed panels and a moulded cornice. A heavy, projecting moulded brick cornice with brick dentils runs along the top, and flat segmental brick arches with rubbed red headers and red brick voussoirs feature over the windows. A dentilled cornice projects at the corners above the pilasters, forming capitals. The central panelled door, with square top lights, sits within a doorcase featuring splayed reveals, fluted pilasters with carved capitals, and an ornamental entablature, all under a flat segmental splayed arch with a panelled soffit. The street elevation is considered the finest and most unspoiled early 18th-century facade in Westerham, with the detailing returned at each end. Grosvenor House is historically linked with Nos. 1 and 2 Lockyers Place, Grosvenor House Cottage, and Nos. 1 and 2 Dale Cottages on Mill Street.
